The power of herbs for haircare: Rosemary

At TRUU by Nature, we're big fans of Rosemary. You'll see it in our hair shampoo products and bars, in our (future) facial serums, creams and lotions. It has a delicate herbal scent that is so delicate, forest-like and natural, but most of all, it offers a ton of benefits to both skin and hair.

Rosemary isn't just for cooking – It's a rich source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, so it can soothe dry and itchy skin, calm redness and even prevent signs of premature aging.

In hair and scalp, it offers lots of good compounds that are released to promote nerve growth and improve circulation. It has been shown to improve hair thickness and growth, thanks to its ability to help regenerate cells.

Did you know..? You can make your own "rosemary herbal tonic" for hair that's soft and smooth, calming any itching down and revitalizing your scalp! (Check out the DIY recipe listed below!)

Rosemary used to be one of grandma's favourite herbs for hair growth – you know, long before it was remastered into a synthetic powder that many streamline companies still use today. Grandma was right, as we should all be using it a lot more often for beautiful locks and healthy scalps!

Rosemary stimulates hair growth, increases hair shine, and relieves irritated scalps. The essential oil extracted from rosemary is a concentrated way you can also use it to soothe your scalp – just make sure you diluted first with some jojoba or olive oil, and rub all over your scalp before washing off with the most natural cleansers nature has provided (ours, of course!).

At OBLOOM, we're right into the more natural ways of looking after skin and hair. There's no reason to spend hundreds of dollars on efficient ways to look after yourself. Take a look at our product's ingredient lists and you'll understand why we choose the ingredients we choose. Natural is best, and if you can pick an herb like rosemary and make use of it for its benefits, why not?

DIY ROSEMARY HAIR TONIC RECIPE

Here's how you can easily make a Rosemary Hair Tonic that will help stimulate your hair follicles for a fresh, revitalized scalp that's filled with the amazing benefits rosemary has to offer... So easy! And it only takes as long as a cup of tea to make:

Step 1:

Bring a cup of water to boil, and then allow for it to cool slightly for 3-5 minutes before adding in the rosemary, otherwise you could scorch it.

We like to use one of these tea steeper with a mesh basket inside, that way it's easier to strain after.

Add 5g fresh rosemary leaves and cover with 100g of slightly-cooled freshly boiled water and allow to steep for about 15 minutes (the longer, the better!).

If you want to make it a little thicker so you can leave it in your scalp and hair a longer amount of time, then you can combine a Tablespoon of vegetable glycerin with 1 gram (a small pinch) of Xanthan Gum in a glass, mix until it thickens, and then add to your infusion.

Pour all over the hair and scalp and leave it for at least 15-20 minutes – again, the longer the better – if you can try leaving it in for at least an hour you'll reap the rewards!

For added benefits, you can also add some calendula and chamomile leaves to the teapot to steep. These two herbs are wonderful for both hair and scalp – two of our favourites!
